What Is CNC Turning Service & How CNC Turning Works

CNC turning produces parts with cylindrical features by removing material from metal or plastic rods using cutters, center drills or live tooling. CNC Turning uses computer-controlled machines to create a different final product. The process uses a single-point cutting tool that inserts parallel to the material to cut. The material is rotated at changing speeds and the tool cutting traverses to create cylindrical cuts with exact measurements. It is used to create circular or tubularshares from larger material pieces. It is an automated process and speeds can be adjustments for greater accuracy rather than turning a lathe by hand.

When it comes to the CNC turning process, the subtractive manufacturing method is typically performed on CNC lathe or turning center. Before the cutting, G-code and turning machine need to be prepared, then secure the blank bar of stock material in the chuck of spindle, the chuck holds the piece in place when the spindle rotates. With the spindle spins to certain speed, a stationary single-point CNC turning cutter will move on a linear path that parallel to the axis of rotation and remove excess material, reduce the diameter of the block, specify the dimension and create smooth finish, to get final custom CNC turned parts with desired specification.

① As machined(standard): ~125 RA µin (3.2 RA µm). Minor tool marks will be visible on the part.
② Smoothed: Parts are machined at a lower feed rate in order to achieve a surface roughness of ~62.5 RA µin (1.6 RA µm). Surface roughness can be decreased up to ~32 RA µin (0.8RAµm) upon request.
③ Bead Blasted: Bead blasting adds a uniform matte or satin surface finish on a machined part, removing all tool marks. Mainly used for aesthetic purposes.
④ Anodized Clear or Color: Anodizing adds a thin, hard, non-conductive ceramic coating on the surface of aluminum parts, increasing their corrosion and wear resistance. Available in a variety of colors.
⑤ Anodized Hardcoat: Hardcoat anodizing produces a thicker ceramic coating providing excellent corrosion and wear resistance. for functional applications.
